We’re Getting Maui’d! My Hawaii Engagement Story

The next day we drove up Haleakalā (where he originally wanted to propose, but the weather was unpredictable)

It’s been 5 whole months since my fiancee (still getting used to that word) proposed to me on May 4th and of course I said — YES! As of today, Jon and I have been together for just over 5 ½ years, lived together for 3 and have an adorable dog and amazing life together.

Of course like any serious couple, the topic of marriage has been discussed multiple times and like any normal sane woman, I’ve sent him at least four thousand photos of engagement rings.

At the end of April, we headed down to Maui for vacation and to attend our friend’s wedding. It was an amazing week, filled with hiking, travelling the Road to Hana exploring waterfalls, swimming, golfing and visiting the incredible small towns. Honestly, I didn’t think the trip could get any better.

The trip was a blast, I made a ton of new friends who were there for the wedding, and there was a running joke that Jon and I, “would be next” to get hitched. Little did I know, he had told a few people he had planned on proposing soon.

Fun fact: I caught the bouquet at the wedding and everyone went wild.

Fast forward a few days later, Jon and I had a few days to ourselves before we had to return home. On Friday May 4th, we had booked a boat ride in the morning to snorkel and swim with turtles. It was INCREDIBLE, we saw so many turtles and it was probably the highlight of the trip — except for the fact that I got incredibly sea sick which is completely out of the ordinary for me.

ater that day, Jon asked me if I wanted to go for a drive and find this cool blowhole that someone had told him about. Of course, I agreed, so we started driving along the coast and we came across an opening to a viewing spot, which we thought was the right place.

Turns out it was just a really beautiful viewing spot on a cliff, so we decided to stay for a while and soak it all in. Unbeknownst to me, Jon brought a blanket and some wine with him — which should have been the red flag that something romantic was going to happen but I was completely clueless.

We sat side by side, enjoying the wine and he started questioning me about how I enjoyed the wedding which was his segway into him saying, “Well, I think we should get married.” He pulls out the ring, gets on one knee and I was completely and utterly SHOCKED.

I immediately started ugly crying, saying yes. It was completely unexpected and I couldn’t have asked for a better moment. Just the two of us, alone, with a breathtaking view in one of the most amazing places on earth!

Today marks 8 months until we tie the knot at Westmount Golf & Country Club in Waterloo, Ontario!

Stay tuned to follow the wedding planning journey!
